Should I Change my Hair Routine in the Fall?

The days of dreaded humidity and sleeveless tops are finally nearing their end. As we start to think about changing our wardrobe from shorts to scarves, we tend to leave out one important factor: hair care. Just as the colder weather can be damaging to your skin, it can always take the life from your hair in the matter of days. Here are simple ways you can help stop dull, flat hair and continue having shiny, bouncy locks – even after wearing all those hats.

Moisturize!

Just like your skin, the colder seasons suck the moisture out of your hair. It leaves your hair looking dull and limp. To counteract this, use a deep moisturizing mask once a week to ramp up the shine. Aveda’s Dry Remedy is perfect for a once a week conditioning treatment that’s light on your hair but will still provide the shine you need.

Change it up!

Even though we tend to ‘stick with what we know’ when it comes to our hair routine, using the same products year round isn’t going to do much for your hair. Believe it or not, hair does build a tolerance to products rendering them less affective. Also, keep in mind how different the weather is in the winter than in the summer, so your styling products shouldn’t be the same for both extremes. For example, if your hair is on the thinner end of the spectrum, try something richer in moisture (Aveda’s Dry Remedy line or their Pure Abundance line) versus something lighter.

Don’t Skimp on the Trims

No matter what, your ends are going to split. They split even more when the weather gets colder. It’s important to keep a steady schedule with your stylist. Keeping up a rhythm of regular trims will help maintain healthy hair. Another way to help split ends is to invest in split end repairing products. Aveda is coming out with a split end repairing serum soon that helps rebuild your ends with each use. Come in and ask a stylist about it today.

Know which Products to Invest in

Even though you want to keep your products on the lighter side of things to prevent your hair falling flat, you still want to think about products that will keep your hair shiny and your style intact. A smoothing cream (Aveda’s Smooth Infusion Styling Cream) or a light hairspray (Aveda’s Air Control Hairspray) will help smooth any flyways from the blistery wind. To make sure your tresses stay shiny and not dull, try using a color protecting shampoo and conditioner (Aveda’s Color Conserve) to help lock in moisture and tone.

In the end, the cold weather should not be the only time you baby your hair. Natural conditions from the unforgiving heat to even the coldest of days will do some damage to your hair. Going the extra mile to make sure your hair is taken care of all year round is important to maintain healthy locks. As always, if you have any questions regarding haircare, your XEX stylist is the best person to talk to. Our consultations are complimentary – we’re here to help!
