Keep Your Hair Looking Shiny and Healthy Over Winter Months

With each season, the care of our hair changes. Some of the great benefits in warm weather (you know…besides laying in the sun, cute summer dresses, or eating al fresco) are allowing our hair to air dry and soak in some Vitamin D. However, in a beautiful Midwest City like Chicago, cold temperatures reign and the daily damage on our hair is an issue. These are the times when it is vital to care for our hair.

In times of harsh winds and below freezing temperatures, here are some great tips on maintaining and enhancing the health and shine of your hair!

1. A Thorough Cleansing

To protect and boost that amazing of hair of yours, proper care in the shower can play a major role. It is easy to be careless with the amount of product and technique in washing your hair that can actually damage it. It is best to soak hair in warm water to begin the cleansing process. First, rub a small amount of shampoo (about the size of a quarter) and apply to hair while gently massaging scalp. Once all shampoo is completely rinsed out, apply the same amount of conditioner and massage into hair. (We recommend using Aveda’s Smooth Infusion or Shampure Shampoo & conditioners, you simply ask one of our stylists which product would work best for you hair.) If you are fighting with any stubborn knots that won’t budge, try using a wide-brush comb to work them out prior to applying conditioner. Now this last bit may sound a bit frightening, but it will enhance shine immensely. Get ready…do a final rinse using icy cold water to close your pores.

2. Properly Dry Your Hair

With the cold weather and wind, air drying our hair is out of the question. To maintain the health and bring out the shine in your hair, here are some tips to follow. Pat hair dry with a towel first, removing as much water as possible. Following, comb out knots and tangles with a wide-tooth comb. Apply a heat-protection spray to guard strands against extra damage. Once you have moved on to the blow dryer, keep in mind to point the nozzle downwards from your scalp to ends.

3. Care for Your Hair

Maintaining your hair is also important throughout the day. It is very easy to comb our fingers through our hair (especially after a burst of wind!), but it is best to refrain as much as possible. Our hands just add grease build up in the hair making an unwanted shine occur.

Don’t forget to get your hair trimmed often, split ends build up and quickly make hair look dry and damaged. While you’re in, ask for a conditioning treatment to really boost the shine. Definitely ask your stylist for suggestions on products that would work best with your hair as well!
